The Reformation: UNITY

Today, our society is festering from increasingly hostile, divisive, and prejudicial attitudes. Divisions hutchins_forward.jpgabound. Opinions serve as the haters volley.

And it is in such an atmosphere that the Church of Jesus thrives. For while culture descends into the morass and minutia of splintered loyalties and prejudiced affections – we become brighter still because we are the light of the world. Our luminary oneness becomes the brilliance of our light.

The Church is the manifestation of God’s love through the unity of the brotherhood. Ephesians 4 speaks of: One body, One spirit, One hope, One Lord, One faith, One baptism and One God. The importance of one word stands out, the word "one."

There is a new reformation taking place right now. There is a gathering of eagles. There is a calling of leaders. Schisms, strife, anger and suspicion are being offered on newly built altars of submission so that the “Brotherhood of Unity” becomes the tangible reality of Christianity!

For far too long, we’ve wrestled with the ideals of oneness as sameness!  We’ve struggled to achieve a unity that was defined by uniformity!  And yet, uniformity is not unity at all.

Submission to unity is the ultimate expression of love because it is the “mature” image of Jesus Christ.  Submission breaks the tormenting hold of ambition. Submission is borne out of a revelation of the character of Jesus that accelerates our growth and accentuates the impartation of our grace. To submit to a yoke of unity, does not demand me to bow in uniformity, nor does it require of me my personality. Jesus had full possession of His soul. He did not react to man; He fully trusted God. He could submit to man’s frail systems and miscarriages of authority, knowing that God would ultimately judge with righteousness which transforms all injustice. Where Lucifer demanded full independence from the authority of God, Jesus perfectly yielded to His Father’s authority (see 2 Cor. 13:4).

When we submit to unity, we gain more than we invest. Elisha received a double portion of Elijah’s anointing because he passionately and faithfully submitted himself to his mentor’s anointing. Remember, Elisha was the opposite personality type of Elijah, yet by submitting, he doubled the accomplishments of Elijah.

When we walk together in unity, we double our spiritual power because we gain some of the other person’s anointing. Elisha did not become “little Elijah.”  He still retained his own personality and approach to ministry – but when his ministry began, he had twice as much power.

Church leader, I urge you to go meet other church leaders in your community and repent of any sin, confess any fault, attack any schism or division, until new altars of oneness and unity are erected by your submission.  If you will, you will enjoy the fruits of a reformation of unity that will rock your city until its people can say, “We’ve seen the glory of Christ.”  John 17:20

Jesus only prayed one prayer for His church, "Father, make them one."
